The Sunrise Prayer Relay is an annual event where Christians across the globe intercede for their nation as New Year’s Day dawns in their part of the world. From New Zealand to Alaska it is an opportunity for believers to pray over the coming year as the baton passes across the world’s time zones.
The Prayer Relay is an Australian inititiative that invites individual believers, prayer groups, networks and churches to gather at a public location such as a hill, lookout or landmark in their city or town to intercede for the year ahead. Or given lockdown restrictions to pray within your family bubble at home.
Warwick Marsh is one of the visionaries behind the Sunrise prayer relay. A prayer and family advocate in Australia, he confirms that over the past six years they have had registrations from 70 different countries. Participating nations include the USA, South Africa, Namibia, Pakistan, Japan, United Kingdom, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Zealand, and Australia.
“This year our focus is to proclaim ‘Jesus is Lord’,” says Warwick. This is in keeping with Philippians 2:10,11 which says: “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
“During this 2021 Sunrise Prayer Relay we are circling the globe with prayer, praise and worship and surrendering our lives to Jesus Christ for the glory of God,” Warick continues.
Sunrise Prayer Relay 2021
The Sunrise Prayer Relay is based on Psalm 5:3 which says, “In the morning, Lord, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.” So right from the start of 2021, let us pray for revival and transformation for our respective nations according to 2 Chronicles 7:14. Let us all also pray for a great harvest of souls for the Lord Jesus Christ.
Pat Steele, a Youth for Christ missionary in Australia, encourages participants in the 2021 Prayer Relay to say the Lord’s Prayer together at sunrise and make a declaration of the Lordship of Jesus over their lives, family, region and nation.
“At your location we encourage you to include praise and worship, prayers, and scripture readings. You could even take communion, shine a torch, or light a candle. What you do for your sunrise celebration is up to you.”
